What is Coaching?

Coaching is not telling people what to do; it is helping them clarify and control their life. It is helping them evaluate what they are doing now in their life with respect to their objectives, dreams, values, and intentions. It gives them new choices and leads to change. Coaching helps a person go beyond the mental blocks of what they thought was possible.

Coaching works as a partnership between coach and client, it helps to clarify goals, to make them challenging and motivating, then to achieve those goals with the energy that comes from their deepest values.

Coaches are specially trained to work with people from all walks of life to help them achieve their goals, live their values and be the best they can be.

What exactly is expat coaching?

The coaching of expatriates & internationals focuses on the specific challenges related to relocation.

It can enable you to adapt to your new environment as well as identify and address cultural, family and other social, professional or personal challenges.

The coaching is tailored to help you achieve a sense of meaning, satisfaction, and success in specific areas.

Can I work with a coach who lives in a different geography?

Absolutely. I wouldn’t let geography be the primary factor in finding the right coach. I welcome clients from anywhere in the world as long as you’re proficient in English, German or Spanish (the languages I am proficient in).

With my clients, we have our sessions over video conference which facilitates needs, time zones and geographical locations.

What makes Gabriela Encina unique?

My approach to my coaching is formed by moments of reinvention in my own life, my professional corporate background, my work as a licensed psychologist and a certified coach. I work mostly with individuals navigating a major move by living in a different city or country.  The kind of move that sends your life in a radically different direction, often into the unknown.

I provide both coaching and counseling from start to finish.  Starting with more open-ended coaching during the stage of exploration, then offering more practical coaching once we’ve identified the issues and best ways to approach it.

What are benefits of expat coaching to individuals and organisations?

Expat coaching is both a developmental process and an evolutionary one. As a coachee, you will be learning how to accomplish more with less effort. This is the developmental aspect of coaching. On the other hand, you will also be thinking differently and expanding yourself and your world. This process is decidedly evolutionary.

The value of coaching can be extended if part of the coaching time is used to design the perfect environment in which to live and work. Where someone lives and how he or she lives are keys to their success, not just in the business world. Who someone spends time with, and is inspired by, can make the difference between success and failure. The willingness to invest some time – and perhaps money – in improving the environment makes assigned employees feel supported on all levels.

While companies may invest considerable resources on behalf of expat employees, many overlook the unique issues and needs facing their spouses and families. Spousal stress or dissatisfaction is one of the primary reasons that many international assignments fail or lead to divorce.

Therefore, the success of an assignment often depends on the well-being of the family supporting the assigned employee. According to an internal report of the Personnel Management Association (2018), when coaching is combined with training, individuals increase their productivity by an average of 86% compared to 22% with training alone. Providing on-going support via expatriate coaching also bridges the gap between traditional expatriate and repatriation training.

Gabriela Encina also offers coaching services to all HR department members, especially those involved in expat and transition management.
