Counselling for international and cross-cultural couples

Clarity, closeness, and a relationship that fits the life you're building together.

You’re building a life together across countries, cultures, and languages. You want a relationship that feels steady, even when everything around it keeps moving.

I know expat relationships from the inside. I help you untangle miscommunication, ease cultural friction, and work as a team.

Sessions in English, Spanish, and German, and each of you can use the language you feel most at home in.

Challenges for expat couples

Your relationship holds at least two cultures, two ways of communicating, and a life built far from your usual support system. That mix shapes how you talk, make decisions, handle pressure, and share daily life, and for some couples, how you raise children.

I help you see those cultural layers, find the shared ground underneath, and turn your differences into a source of connection.

You’ll leave with communication tools that make conversations clearer, ways to cope with life far from family, and support through the transitions that come with living abroad.

What expat couples counselling can help with

Our sessions can help you:

Improve communication

In a multicultural relationship, small words can carry a lot of weight. You get practical tools that make everyday conversations easier and clearer.

Reconnect emotionally

A busy life across borders can crowd out time for each other. We make room for closeness and for time that belongs to the two of you.

Understand cultural layers

Many expectations carry a cultural influence, from how you argue to how you celebrate. You learn to spot these layers and talk about them with curiosity.

Strengthen your partnership

You build a partnership shaped for an international life, with evidence-based tools you can use between sessions.

A partnership strong enough for a global life

In a strong expat partnership, both people feel seen and valued. Conversations have room for humour, even when several languages share the dinner table. Cultural differences add depth and colour to their shared life.

They support each other through the distance from family and build a sense of home that moves with them. Their connection grows through curiosity about each other’s worlds.

Expat couple at home together

Together, they move through each new place as a team, turning challenges into discoveries and each transition into a chance to grow closer. Their story holds strength, joy, and love shaped by a global life.

How does an intake session work?

Understanding your relationship

A warm start where you share who you are as a couple: your background, what brought you here, and the key moments that shaped your partnership. This sets the tone for an open conversation where both of you can speak freely.

Exploring your dynamic

A closer look at how your relationship works today: communication patterns, current challenges, goals, and the influence of life abroad. We use psychological tools and structured questions to understand your strengths and what you’d like to change.

Shaping your path forward

A collaborative moment to ask questions, understand the therapeutic approach, and map out next steps. You leave with first insights and a clear sense of where we go from here.

This session lays the foundation for our work together and shapes the therapy around your relationship.

Gabriela Encina, licensed psychologist for expat and cross-cultural couples

Hola, I’m Gabriela, expat and in a cross-cultural relationship too!

Your counselling comes from someone who knows the expat relationship world from the inside. I’ve lived multicultural love in three languages, with all its awkward translations, cultural clashes, family expectations, and emotional puzzles.

I’ve spent years hearing the unfiltered stories from international couples: the quiet power shifts, the misunderstandings that start small, the moments when identity and culture pull in different directions. These patterns are often where our work begins.

I see the dynamics behind the words, the cultural layers under each reaction, and the habits shaped by different worlds. This is what allows me to help couples grow closer with clarity, honesty, and a touch of humour, wherever life takes them.

Why choose me?

Focused on cross-cultural couples

I work with the challenges many international couples bring: cultural clashes, multilingual communication, transitions, identity shifts, and the pressure of building a life abroad. The support is specialised and evidence-based, shaped for globally mobile partners.

A practical approach

I combine cognitive behavioural tools, acceptance-based strategies, and coaching methods. You leave each session with steps you can use in daily life, from conversations to routines to cultural dynamics.

Lived expat experience in three languages

I have built multicultural relationships throughout my life and live in one today, moving between English, German, and Spanish. You get guidance grounded in real expat life and clinical evidence, shaped around your partnership.

What expat couples say…

Your expat love story matters

Are you and your partner steering through the twists and turns of life abroad?

Think of your relationship as a sailboat on international waters: beautiful, full of potential, and adjusting to shifting winds, new currents, and the occasional storm. I’ve sailed these waters myself, and I’ve guided dozens of couples through them. Together, we chart a course towards clearer communication, reignite the spark that keeps your bond strong, and make room for joy when life sends unexpected waves your way.

We’ll set meaningful goals, from daily routines to life milestones, and develop the skills to handle cultural differences, career moves, and distance from family with confidence and a touch of humour. With experience, strategy, and real-world insight, your partnership can flourish wherever you drop anchor.

Common Questions

What couples ask me before booking the first session.

Different languages within one session, the weight of following a partner abroad, mixed-nationality dynamics, what to expect when one of you is more reluctant. Your questions, answered honestly.

  • My partner and I are struggling since we moved abroad. Is expat couples counselling right for us?

If you feel more like flatmates than partners, if arguments keep circling back to the same unresolved thing, or if one of you gave up a career or a country for the other and the weight of that is starting to show, those are signs worth paying attention to. Expat life puts relationships under a specific kind of pressure.

  • Can we have couples sessions in different languages, one of us in English and the other in Spanish?

Yes. One of you can speak English while the other speaks Spanish or German within the same session, and I bridge between you in real time.

The hard truths often live in the mother tongue. When you both speak in yours, the work goes deeper, faster.

  • I moved abroad for my partner and I'm losing myself. Is there support for that?

Yes, and it's one of the conversations I have most often. Following a partner abroad can mean putting your own career, friendships, and identity on hold for someone else's opportunity. That's a loss, even when you chose it.

We work on rebuilding a sense of self and direction that belongs to you.
