Counselling for expats and

Counselling for expats and globally mobile professionals

Moving abroad changes more than your address.

New language, new rules, new people who have yet to hear your jokes. Some days you feel at home. Other days a phone call to the bank takes all your energy, and you wonder where your confidence went.

I know this from the inside. I’ve lived as an expat for more than 15 years, and I’ve supported more than 500 international individuals and couples through moves, returns, and the stages in between.

In our sessions we work on what matters to you now: settling in, pressure at work, loneliness, relationships, identity, or the question of where home is next. Sessions are online, in English, Spanish, or German, and grounded in CBT, ACT, and coaching tools.

If you’re looking for support as an international couple, I work with couples too.

Elidia, a Spanish expat living in Ireland, shares her experience of working with me.

Carmela, an Italian expat living in Spain, shares her experience of working with me.

Sarah, an American expat living in Germany, shares her experience of working with me.

My counselling adapts to your situation and what you want from it. Together we work on moving forward, so the life you chose abroad feels more like your own.

How individual counselling works

!

Step 1

Book an intake session: 70 minutes, €250

We get to know each other and discuss your needs. Required for everyone starting counselling.

What to expect.

You are my priority

We’ll have personalised sessions of 50 minutes. In the intake session we decide together how many and how often. My counselling adapts to your needs and goals.

Let's get to work!

Between sessions, I share worksheets, exercises, and material such as videos, books, and podcasts, so the work continues in your everyday life.

Support along the way

While we work together, you can message me between sessions whenever you need to. I reply within 48 hours.

!

Step 3

Begin our work together

We start where you are. Session by session, you learn tools you can use on your own: noticing what you feel, choosing what matters to you, and taking one concrete step at a time. The aim is a life abroad that feels like yours.

My method

N

1. Identify

What are you feeling? When? Why?

In the first stage, we look at where you are now and what matters to you: your values, purpose, and priorities.

From there, your choices have something solid to stand on.

N

2. Connect

Next, we turn to your emotions and thoughts, so you can connect with them.

This helps you make sense of difficult feelings, question the thoughts that weigh on you, and get clearer on what you want for your life abroad.

Together we use what we learn to build a plan that fits you, so the changes you make can last.

N

3. Move forward

It’s time to take action!

In this stage, we look at the tools you already have and which ones serve you best, then add new strategies where you need them.

We set goals that give you direction, and you try them out between sessions, shaping your life abroad around your own needs.

If you’re looking for support as an international couple, I work with couples too.

Gabriela Encina, licensed psychologist for expats, smiling

Hi, I’m Gabriela, licensed psychologist and expat!

I bring my work experience and my own life abroad into our sessions. One thing new clients tell me early on: “I don’t have to explain expat life to you; that’s a relief!”

Our sessions combine evidence-based tools from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and coaching.

We start with your situation and work together on what you want to grow: your confidence, your sense of self, and your place in a new country.

Why counselling with Gabriela?

My three-step method

Identify, connect, and move forward. These three steps guide our work, and we adapt the process to your needs.

Flexibility

My support is online and personalised, so you can have sessions from wherever you live, at a time that suits you. I speak English, Spanish, and German fluently, so we can switch languages when you need to (like I do!).

Support between sessions

While we work together, you can message me by WhatsApp or email to share thoughts, feelings, and insights as they come up. I reply within 48 hours. Much of the digesting happens between sessions, and this keeps the work moving.

Positivity and freedom

Say it the way it comes out, in whichever language it comes out in. I listen with warmth, honesty, and an open mind.

Vast experience

More than 20 years of experience across HR, therapy, and coaching, grounded in CBT and ACT. I’ve supported more than 500 international individuals and couples.

Empathy and understanding

I’ve built a life abroad too, so we talk from expat to expat. You can share what you feel in your own words, at your own pace, and be heard.

What clients say…

Testimonial from Michele Soresi, English Language and Cultural Assistant, individual counselling client: I have learned ways to create the life I desire using my values as a guide and how to keep my thoughts from paralyzing me into inaction. Gabriela has provided a toolkit of resources that will benefit me long after our time working together.
Testimonial from Carla Rojas Paz, Environmental Professional, individual counselling client: She's methodical and has several tools to offer you, she's flexible and understands that what's right for one person isn't right for the next person. She was open enough to try different methods with me that were a little more "creative" that I responded to well.
Testimonial from Rose Allen, Migration and Displacement Data Analyst, individual counselling client: I could not recommend Gabriela enough. Her extensive expertise and experience working with expats, combined with her empathy, humor, and practical approach provide the ideal support system to help you face difficult emotions and situations, define and become the person you want to be, and build a fulfilling life abroad that once may have felt unattainable.

Ready to talk?

Moving abroad took courage. That same courage can help you shape the life you want there.

The first step is an intake session. We get to know each other, look at what you need, and decide together how to continue.

Common Questions

What you might be wondering before we begin.

Culture shock, isolation, burnout, identity questions, what therapy looks like, and how long it takes. Your questions, answered honestly.

  • I'm struggling with culture shock and isolation living abroad. Can you help?

Culture shock, isolation, and the feeling of being permanently new are some of the most common things I work with, and they're often underestimated. What looks like a bad week can be a deeper identity shift that deserves attention.

My sessions are online, one-to-one, and grounded in CBT, ACT, and coaching tools.

  • I feel burned out and disconnected. Is that normal for expats?

It's common, and it deserves attention. High-achieving expats often carry the weight of performing at work while struggling outside of it. Holding it all together in a second language, in a culture that still feels foreign, in a city where you have little history yet, is exhausting in ways that can be hard to put into words.

  • How long does therapy with you usually take?

It depends on what you're working on. Some clients come for a focused six to twelve sessions around a specific transition or decision. Others stay longer for deeper work on patterns they've carried for years.

We review progress together regularly. The goal is for you to leave when you feel ready to continue on your own.
